French Onion Chicken Crock Pot Recipe
Ingredients:
For the chicken:
- 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
For the French onion sauce:
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 cup shredded Gruyere cheese
Instructions:
1. Season the chicken breasts with garlic powder, dried thyme, salt, and pepper.
2. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat and brown the chicken on both sides until golden. Transfer the chicken to the crock pot.
3. In the same skillet, melt the butter and add the sliced onions. Cook over medium heat until the onions are caramelized and golden brown, about 15-20 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent burning.
4. Add minced garlic to the skillet and cook for an additional minute.
5. Transfer the caramelized onions and garlic to the crock pot with the chicken.
6. Pour beef broth and Worcestershire sauce over the chicken and onions. Add dried thyme, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine.
7. Cover the crock pot and cook on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 3-4 hours, until the chicken is cooked through and tender.
8. Preheat the broiler in your oven.
9. Transfer the chicken breasts to a baking dish and sprinkle shredded Gruyere cheese on top of each breast.
10. Place the baking dish under the broiler for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
11. Serve the French onion chicken with the sauce spooned over the top. It pairs well with mashed potatoes, rice, or crusty bread.
